Independence Fishing Derby

Independence welcomes all anglers - beginners and experienced, young and old to the Annual Independence Fishing Derby. Local residents and visitors to our area are invited. Come experience our unique recreational opportunities, with wide open spaces you do not have to share with a crowd and be surrounded by our incredible scenic beauty, unspoiled environment and the biggest sky.

The Derby is a "Free Blind Bogey" event - Sample fish are caught shortly before the event to determine the secret winning weight. Lots of Prizes & Live Music at the Weigh-in!

Registration and weigh-in will be from 10:30a.m. to 3 p.m. only at Dehy Park. Only participants in line by 3 p.m. will be included in the Derby. Awarding of Prizes begins at 4:00 p.m. at Dehy Park.

All categories will have both Junior Prizes and Adult Prizes. (Junior contestants are those who have not reached their 16th birthday.)The categories are:

Blind Bogey
Heaviest Trout (1st through 3rd place)
Heaviest Trout Stringer (1st through 3rd place)
Largest Wild Trout
Largest Catfish
Largest Bluegill

We would like to express a special thanks to California Department of Fish and Game and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Tim Alpers for all the work they do in maintaining the great fishing experience available in the Independence area. Without their help the Derby would not be possible.

Location
In the Independence region of the Owens Valley, Inyo County California. Independence is located on Highway 395 at the eastern base of the Sierra Nevada range about 16 miles north of Lone Pine and about 41 miles south of Bishop. Independence is approximately 210 miles north of Los Angeles.

Lodging and Camping
We invite you to stay in one of our local motels. You can bring your camper or tent and camp in one of the many campgrounds. All of which have pristine creeks nearby.

Food
Food is available at Chevron & Subway of Independence and food-to-go is available at Independence Shell; all are located in the middle of town on Edward's Street (Hwy. 395).

 

While You Are Here
Visit the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, Eastern California Museum, Manzanar National Historic Site and the Chamber's Visitor Center in the center of town. Sign up for the Chamber sponsored Independence Day 4K Run and other July 4th Celebration activities.

Participants are visitors to the natural and cultural resources in the Eastern Sierra. You are responsible for your personal safety during activities you pursue. Natural hazards exist. A 2010 California Sport fishing License is required of all participants 16 years of age and over. Your license must be on your person when fishing. There are no exemptions to California Fishing or other laws during this event.
